From April 28 to May 12, 2025, a series of six meetings took place at the IIS Benvenuto Cellini Institute as part of the “Sounds and Noise” project, proposed by Vie en.ro.se. Ingegneria within the initiatives of Le Chiavi della Città, promoted by the Municipality of Florence.

Class II CT of the upper secondary school, accompanied by Prof. Daniela Sarocchi, completed a training course on sound and noise education, structured through lectures and hands-on experiences.

In the first lesson, the technicians from Vie en.ro.se. Ingegneria introduced the definitions of sounds and noise, discussed the physics of sound, the auditory mechanism, the potential damage caused by excessive noise exposure, and how to practice “safe listening.” The second lesson focused on the fundamentals of acoustics and how to ensure optimal acoustic comfort in schools. In the third lesson, these theoretical concepts were applied in a practical experience measuring the reverberation time in a classroom and the gym.

The fourth lesson introduced the goals and ongoing activities of the European LIFE SNEAK project, along with the concept of soundscape and soundwalk. During the fifth lesson, a soundwalk was conducted in the vicinity of the school, during which students and teachers completed a questionnaire on their perception of the soundscape at each listening point. In the sixth and final lesson, the results of the questionnaires were presented, and a simple acoustic improvement project for the classroom was introduced to the students.

We hope this will be the first of many future “sound” collaborations.
